Howard Guttman, Principal, Guttman Development Strategies
Roy Benin, Chief Consumer Officer, Mars Chocolate

Building a High-Performance Leadership Brand Inside Mars Chocolate, North America

With iconic brands such as M&Ms, Snickers, and Skittles you would think that Mars Chocolate, N.A. would not have to invest much in building a powerful, high-performing culture and organization.  But in today’s tough, global marketplace, you can’t rely solely on products to give you a sustainable competitive edge. People and organizational excellence are as important as superior products.

In this session, Roy Benin, who directs Mars Chocolate N.A.’s Consumer Office, and his consultant Howard M. Guttman, Principal, Guttman Development Strategies, present an off-the-record look into how Mars Chocolate, N.A.  built a high-performing, horizontal leadership brand, promoted that brand internally as effectively as Mars’ promotes its iconic products, and then embedded that brand in its organization, beginning with the senior leadership team, to achieve outstanding results.

What is the high-performing, horizontal leadership brand toward which Mars Chocolate N.A. aspired?  What’s the brand promise and how did the organization deliver against it?  What were the roadblocks and what did executives learn in overcoming them?  What was HR’s role and what’s the ROI of building a culture and organization as strong as the organizations brands?  You’ll take away practical answers and insights gained as an industry leader moved from OD concept to reality.

    About the Presenters:

Roy Benin joined Mars, Incorporated in March 2000 and has held positions of increasing seniority during that time, moving through both Marketing and Sales positions.
In 2012, Roy became Chief Consumer Officer in Hackettstown NJ.  Roy’s leadership has driven a change agenda deep into the organization, introducing a balanced growth model approach that demands a simplification and portfolio management mindset.  Under his leadership, the Marketing Team has focused on equity building of America’s favorite  brands - M&M’s®, Snickers ®, Twix ®, Dove®, Milky Way® and 3 Musketeers® to share growth.
In 2009, Roy became GM, Canada. During his tenure, Mars Canada Chocolate quadrupled earnings while increasing consumer support by +35%. He has also increased engagement scores by more than a full percentage point, bringing the business’ grand mean to 4.40 and achieving a 35 to 1 actively engaged to disengage ratio. Roy is most proud of the creation of the Chocolate Hearts Awards, which is a peer based recognition program, and the creation of the Canadian Cocoa Sustainability Campaign, which raised funding to build a water filtration system in the Rainforest Alliance cocoa producing region of Billante, Indonesia.
Prior to his GM role, in 2003, he held the role of Marketing Director, Dog, in Canada, where he grew Mars’ Total Dog portfolio by over +4 share points. In 2006, Roy became Vice President of Sales, managing all three business segments. Each year, the Canadian unit delivered against its business targets.

Howard M. Guttman is Principal of Guttman Development Strategies, Inc. (GDS), a Mount Arlington, New Jersey-based management consulting firm founded in 1989 and specializing in building horizontal, high-performance teams; leadership-team alignment; leadership coaching; and leadership development. GDS has been ranked as a top Leadership Development consulting firm by Leadership Excellence magazine, which also named Mr. Guttman to its list of “Excellence 100 Top Thought Leaders.”
Among GDS's U.S. and international corporate clients are Coca-Cola; Johnson & Johnson; L'Oréal; Mars, Inc.; Novartis; Pfizer; Pinnacle Foods Group, LLC; Sears; and Walmart. Mr. Guttman has also consulted with numerous universities and nonprofit organizations around the world.

Mr. Guttman’s corporate experience includes Johnson & Johnson and Automatic Data Processing. He holds an M.S. from Case Western Reserve University's School of Applied Social Sciences.

Mr. Guttman is the author of Great Business Teams: Cracking the Code for Standout Performance; When Goliaths Clash: Managing Executive Conflict to Build a More Dynamic Organization; and Coach Yourself to Win: 7 Steps to Breakthrough Performance on the Job and in Your Life.

Mr. Guttman’s articles have appeared widely in publications ranging from The Harvard Business Review to MWorld, People and Strategy, and USA Today magazine.  He is a sought-after speaker addressing academic and corporate audiences.

Speaker: Judy Umlas, Senior Vice President, Author, Trainer, Publisher, IIL Publishing and allPM.com

Author of Grateful Leadership, a best practices guidebook to employee engagement, staff retention, and increased productivity -- through the power of acknowledgement.

Effective leaders must find ways to enhance people’s level of engagement, commitment and support, especially in the difficult periods all organizations experience at one time or another. Engaged employees work with passion and feel connected and loyal to their organization. This yields higher productivity, sales, and results.

Those leaders who model true acknowledgment behavior will inspire others to do the same and to want to dramatically increase their levels of contribution to the organization, making the power of acknowledgment transformational.
